This past weekend, March 7, 8, and 9, 2025, marked a significant milestone for me as I ventured to my first out-of-state convention with our shop, Loveland Tattoo: the Baltimore Tattoo Arts Festival hosted by Villain Arts. Set in the vibrant heart of Baltimore at the Convention Center, this annual event promised an exhilarating blend of artistry, entertainment, and a celebration of tattoo culture that I couldn't pass up. Attending with our team—Austin Megallon, Tim Bakel-Morgan, guest artist Ronnie Madrid, and myself, Amy Asche and —the festival not only broadened my horizons but also provided me with invaluable insights and unforgettable moments.

Located at the Baltimore Convention Center, specifically in Hall F/G, the festival setup was as welcoming as it was well-organized. The admission fees were quite reasonable, with a $25 day pass and a $50 three-day pass. To further embrace families, admission was free for children under 12, making it an inclusive event. As the doors swung open on Friday at 2 PM, I entered a space alive with excitement, eager participants, and the buzz of tattoo machines.
One of the highlights of the festival was undoubtedly the extensive lineup of entertainment. Each day was packed with jaw-dropping acts and performances that kept the audience captivated.
Friday kicked off with a delightful mix of sideshow acts, including the Dash Ripington Sideshow and the remarkable contortionist Camille Zamboni. Other jaw-dropping performances included Reggie Bügmüncher from the Gong Show and stars from America’s Got Talent, Captain and Maybelle. As the night wound down, the coveted "Tattoo of the Day" was unveiled, showcasing extraordinary artistry that left everyone in awe. Our shop's owner, Austin Megallon, took 4th place for Black and Grey Tattoo of the Day on Friday for his work in progress on his client—a tattoo that he would complete over the duration of the three-day event.

Saturday brought even more excitement, with a robust schedule packed from 12 PM to 11 PM. The tattoo contests were a thrilling showcase of skill and creativity, and I felt the atmosphere filled with budding artists hoping to leave their mark on this vibrant community.

Sunday concluded the festival with a mix of great performances and the awarding of the “Best of Show,” capping off an incredible weekend that had me wishing for even more.
Beyond the entertainment, the festival also prioritized education. I attended a seminar on "Tattooing & Taxes" by Friedman Tax, where I gained practical advice on important topics such as the differences between 1099 and W-2 classifications and common deductible expenses for tattoo artists. It was empowering to be equipped with knowledge that could significantly impact my career in the tattoo industry.

One of the most exciting aspects of the event was the presence of industry heavyweights and stars from “Ink Master.” I had the chance to meet renowned tattoo artists such as Bobby Rice, Holli Marie, and Al Fliction, who were more than willing to share their experiences and insights. Additionally, I encountered special guests like Annette Larue from VICE's “Tattoo Age,” whose passion for the art form resonated deeply with all attendees.
International talent also made an appearance, with artists like Clarke Gable from Borneo specializing in traditional hand-tap tattooing, showcasing the diversity and global nature of the tattoo community.

As I reflect on my journey to the Baltimore Tattoo Arts Festival, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences and memories created. The opportunity to immerse myself in tattoo culture, connect with artists from near and far, and learn from seasoned professionals was invaluable. Not only did I strengthen my appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into each tattoo, but I also cultivated connections and inspired friendships that I hope to carry with me in my artistic endeavors.
This convention was not just about tattoos—it was about community, creativity, and passion. I returned home from Baltimore with a renewed sense of purpose, eager to continue my journey in the world of tattooing, and I cannot wait for my next convention. If you're in the art or tattoo industry, or even just a dedicated enthusiast, I highly recommend seeking out such opportunities; they are truly life-changing. Here’s to more conventions and celebrating the amazing world of tattoos!
