HANNAH JUANITA by Ericka Poore
STEVE AUSTIN and HANNAH JUANITA are the latest two additions to Anti-Corp Music’s adored The Magnolia Sessions, both set for release on July 3rd.
The Magnolia Sessions showcases bluegrass, dark country, and folk singer/songwriter acts, recorded live in an intimate outdoor setting by a large magnolia tree at the Anti-Corp/Black Matter Mastering headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, by owner Dan Emery. The series has delivered albums from the likes of Lost Dog Street Band, The Hill Country Devil, Joe Wunderle, Cooper McBean, The Resonant Rogues, Matt Heckler, Jason Dea West, Johno Leeroy, Cristina Vane, Nick Hans, Casper Allen, Jeff Loops, Angela Autumn, Tyler Hood, Jade Brodie, Douglas Francisco, Ivan McLeod, Austin Stambaugh, Willi Carlisle, Coleman Williams, Joe’s Truck Stop, Aurelia Anne Cohen, Chris Emmert, The Bandit Queen Of Sorrows, Squeaky Bones, Bosko Baker, and Ramblin’ Ricky Tate, many of which have debuted on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts.
STEVE AUSTIN is a rising force in traditional outlaw country music. Born and raised on a horse farm in Lebanon, Tennessee, with deep family roots in the Appalachian hills of Chestnut Mound, he grew up surrounded by the raw sounds of Hank Williams Sr., Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, David Allan Coe, Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash, and Neil Young. He picked up the guitar at age ten and spent countless hours trading old-time country songs with his father, Tillman Austin – a honky-tonk musician whose words and melodies would later light the spark for Steve’s return to his first love. He’s been a professional recording and touring artist for over three decades. As singer and guitarist for Today Is The Day, he’s released fourteen albums, played over a thousand shows worldwide alongside the likes of Slayer, Lamb Of God, and Motörhead, was inducted into the Decibel Hall Of Fame, and produced landmark records from Lamb Of God, Converge, and Deadguy, among many others. His 1999 album In the Eyes Of God featured members of Mastodon, and his life story is captured in the acclaimed documentary The Man Who Loves To Hurt Himself.
Yet the pull of classic country never left. Inspired by his father’s songs, AUSTIN poured three decades of life, loss, love, and hard-won hope into his debut full-length country album, Marked Cards And Loaded Dice, which he fully engineered and recorded on 1960s-1970s vintage analog gear, and released on his own SuperNova Records in May of this year. With STEVE AUSTIN handling guitar, bass, and vocals, and Colin Frecknall on drums, legendary pedal steel master Dana Flood (Hall Of Fame sideman for Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, and George Jones) and fiery fiddle virtuoso Ryu Bennett add soaring, emotional depth.
On the heels of the LP’s release, STEVE AUSTIN now delivers his installment of The Magnolia Sessions, featuring eleven songs, blending many of the songs found on the debut album and more, including Townes Van Zandt and George Jones covers.
AUSTIN writes, “I’ve been a fan of The Magnolia Sessions for a long while. I was honored to be asked to do one for the mighty Anti-Corp Music and owner Dan Emery. I hopped a plane to Nashville and recorded my favorite songs and a couple of killer covers for the record. There was a magic in the air and I felt right home underneath the magnolia tree singing and playing these songs. Truly can’t wait for everybody to get to experience it!”
Dan Emery adds, “Growing up listening to heavy music in Nashville, Today Is The Day has always been a staple in the scene. Getting to meet Steve and record this session was one that feels like it was my youth staying relevant in my current life. Through this process I feel as though I got more than a batch of songs on a recording series. I gained a friendship as well.”
HANNAH JUANITA left her home state of Tennessee in her early twenties, excited to meet the world. She travelled in search of herself, worked odd jobs, and spent countless nights singing fireside under the stars with friends, never pursuing music as a career.
Eventually, Hannah made it back to Tennessee, landing in Nashville with nothing but her dog Loretta, her guitar, and a handful of heartbreak songs. She started singing around town and quickly became a staple live performer and a highly respected vocalist in the traditional country scene in Music City, known for her classic, old-school sound.
Self-proclaimed ramblin’ gal, HANNAH JUANITA has toured heavily around the country since 2021 headlining and supporting acts like Kaitlin Butts, Hayes Carll, Braxton Keith, Nick Shoulders, Emily Nenni, Summer Dean, and Jesse Daniel. Her debut record ‘Hardliner’ established her reputation as a full-hearted, free-spirited, and irresistibly genuine honky-tonk angel. Her second full-length record, Tennessee Songbird, produced by Mose Wilson, was released in 2024 to high acclaim, breaking into the top 40 on the Americana Radio Chart and top 3 on the Alt Country Chart. Named one of the five female artists creating the future of country music by Grammy.com, in 2026, she will be releasing new music and touring across the United States and Europe. Her installment of the series features eight heartfelt songs.
JUANITA writes, “Recording for The Magnolia Sessions feels more like a dream when I reflect back. It was completely dark and fairly hot outside, and I remember feeling a little sticky as I sat by myself on a bench singing and playing my guitar for the cicadas and crickets who sing in that yard every night. Dan’s concept for The Magnolia Sessions really allows him to capture the feeling of the moment as it passes by, which is something you just don’t get cutting in a studio. Truly special. I used this opportunity to record some cover songs that I’ve loved for years. When I write a record, there is usually some kind of theme throughout most of the songs, but I didn’t use any parameters around this project, other than creating a batch of songs that I hold dear.”
Emery reveals, “Hannah had a very smooth session. She nailed most of her tracks in the first take. Even the photo shoot went quickly. I thought that something had gone wrong because everyone was coming back inside like 15 minutes after starting photos, and Ericka was just like, “Nah, she just really knows what she’s doing.” There was one period in the night when a bunch of fireworks started going off at the end of one of her songs. That was probably the only take we couldn’t use, and honestly, I think it may have made for a pretty spot-on way to wrap up the collection.”
