Decibel Magazine is hosting an exclusive stream of Exegesis At The End Of Time, the harrowing fourth LP by Durham, North Carolina-based noise-drenched sludge metal outfit, MAKE, ahead of its release this Friday on Accident Prone Records.
A decade after their praised Pilgrimage Of Loathing LP, MAKE now delivers Exegesis At The End Of Time, once again elevating their place in the genre. The expansive Exegesis At The End Of Time sees the founding duo of guitarist/vocalist Scott Endres (Horseback, The Pod, SUNTAN) and bassist/guitarist/vocalist Spencer Lee (Systems, Vanishing Point) welcoming John Crouch (Horseback, Caltrop, Vanishing Point) and Aaron Smithers (In The Year Of The Pig), making them a four-piece for the first time since their 2010-released debut EP and expanding the band’s cacophonous palate. On this album, they combine a diversity of influences in building both the music and the concept for the record. Droning repetition, angular noise rock, and massive sludge riffs coalesce to underpin literary themes spanning Pynchon and DeBord to Borges and McCarthy, forging a warning: The order that rules our world represents a cosmic violence that will destroy us if we don’t conquer it.
Recorded at The Fidelitorium, produced and mixed by Kris Hilbert (Between The Buried And Me, The Body, Centuries) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Deadguy, Locrian), the art and layout for Exegesis At The End Of Time was handled by the band’s Scott Endres. Those who immerse themselves in the works of Old Man Gloom, Mouth Of The Architect, Rosetta, The Atlas Moth, Rwake, Isis, Amenra, Neurosis, and other encompassing sludge/post-metal acts are advised to hear MAKE’s Exegesis At The End Of Time.
Scott Endres writes, “After about a thousand wrenches got thrown in our works for a decade, somehow, we’re beyond thrilled to be back with another offering of hope and despair delicately balancing on the edge of a world rapidly being destroyed by a perverted ruling class who have no right to share the planet with the rest of us.”
With their advance stream of the album, Decibel ran a short interview with the band, the piece reading in part, “The songs on Exegesis At The End Of Time feel larger and more monumental than anything MAKE have crafted before, taking the highs of their last release (2016’s Pilgrimage Of Loathing) and expanding them into larger, more flowing compositions. There are traces of Neurosis and Isis throughout Exegesis, plus influence from Rosetta, Rwake, and their ilk.”

MAKE has been creating thematic psychedelic noise-sludge since 2008. Drawing on themes of isolation, loss, hope, absurdism, and cataclysm, what started as a space-doom project has since evolved into something far more varied and expressive. During that time the band has been a significant presence in the regional music scene, performing on diverse lineups from Bull City Metal Fest to Hopscotch Music Festival, and touring with a wide range of extreme acts including Crowhurst, Dragged Into Sunlight, Primitive Man, and more.
In 2016, MAKE joined forces with Accident Prone Records for the release of Pilgrimage Of Loathing, which received praise from fans and the media alike. The Quietus wrote, “MAKE conjure a sound that is just as experimental as it is rooted in the brutality of sludge/doom.” Stereogum proclaimed, “Uncontrollable anger aside, there are plenty of moments of pure contemplative beauty, when picked guitars delicately intertwine in zen-inducing ways over feathered drums.”
