Interview With Ethan Lee McCarthy of Primitive Man

Thank you for taking the time to speak to us.
Q. Who are you and what do you do?
A. Ethan and I play guitar/vocals

Q. Is your family supportive?
A. My wife and oldest brother are the most supportive. No one else really seems to understand what I do.
Q. What is your favorite part of your career?
A. Traveling, being with friends. Writing songs.

Q. What is your biggest pet peeve?
A. When equipment breaks.

Q. What projects are you currently working on?
A. Mostly just Primitive Man. But I have a few other things that are starting to take shape musically. I also spend a lot of time doing artwork for other bands. Mostly shirt designs and the occasional album layout.

Q. What kind of challenges did you face in this project?
A. Getting it off of the ground was a little difficult. Getting our van stolen and having our other van break down a bunch while on tour was also a challenge.

Q. How is this project different form things you have done in the past?
A. It is slower, darker, and angrier. It has also had the most success.

Q. What was your favorite part of the process?
A. Probably the song writing.

Q. What is your favorite part of performing?
A. Releasing bad vibes.
Q. Which parts have the most personal meaning to you?
A. All of it!

Q. Most memorable experience in your career?
A. One time in New York City I was walking to get a piece of pizza after the show and we saw a car hit a guy on a motorcycle and when they took his helmet off a shitload of blood poured from it. It was terrifying.

Q. Favorite article of clothing?
A. My custom belt from sweet tooth leather.

Q. What are your plans for the future?
A. To tour a bunch, write many songs, and have a good time doing it.

Q. Best advice you have ever gotten?
A. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.
Q. Who on your current crew is the hardest worker?
A. We all share an equal amount of responsibilities.

Q. Who do you want to say thank you to the most?
A. Everyone who has helped me get this far!

Q. Do you have anything to say to your fans?
A. Thanks for listening!
Q. Where can we find more information about you?
A. Google. Or this page, which is fairly accurate.

PRIMITIVE MAN: Denver Blackened Sludge Squad Announces March Tour Plans; SXSW Takeover Imminent

Denver blackened sludge squad, PRIMITIVE MAN, are plotting another round of roadside takeovers. Set to begin March 5th in Lawrence, Kansas, the band will drag their audio antagonism through a dozen cities, including several appearances at this year's edition of SXSW.

Featuring current and former members of Withered, Clinging To The Trees of A Forest Fire, Death of Self and Reproacher, PRIMITIVE MAN continues to tour in support of latest long player, Scorn. Recorded by Dave Otero at Flatline Audio (Cephalic Carnage, Catheter, Cobalt, etc.), Scorn is a physically and psychologically eviscerating display of sonic negativity featuring seven slow, traumatizing, feedback-doused hymns of hate. Initially unleashed early last year via a collaboration between Throatruiner and Mordgrimm Records before being reissued by Relapse in August, Scorn was applauded for being a, "totally malignant sounding record ... that will consume you whole if you're not careful," by Cvlt Nation, "the best worst thing that has ever happened to you," by Metal Hammer, "one of the most brutal, unsettling and uncompromising albums you will hear all year," by and "depressingly crushing," by Metal Underground.

"Scorn's success lies largely in its equilibrium. It's strange to find something that feels so primal and simultaneously so well-thought out; most metal bands usually favor one or the other and end up with a misplaced affect or a misplaced sense of composition. Primitive Man manage to balance both, and the result is terrifyingly addicting and unforgivingly heavy - the only reason we're motivated to recover from its weight is so that we can reach up and hit the replay button." -- MetalSucks

" tracks of pure hatred, self-loathing and psychotic rage. This isn't your run of the mill bong-ripping doom metal that has been done a million times. No, this is the actual feeling of "doom" in audio form. Scorn will instill feelings of dread and fear in you and you will love every freaking minute of it. I highly recommend this one." - American Aftermath

"This isn't an album where douchebags are screaming because they think it's cool. This is an album where you just know there was despair, anger, violence and hatred in the studio with these guys as they were recording. That's what makes Scorn so worthwhile of your time and money." - Popdose

"PRIMITIVE MAN seek to numb the senses and freeze the heart using lumbering tidal waves of bleak, suffocating sonic nihilism, more likely to reduce those who absorb it into helpless, convulsing fetal positions. - Blabbermouth

"PRIMITIVE MAN delivers the kind of doom metal reminiscent of a vast, apocalyptic wasteland where the only inhabitants left are too busy committing acts of lethal brutality against one another to care about things as trivial as beauty or art." - Metal Insider
