Everything Is Noise is hosting the exclusive premiere of “Choke,” the harrowing new song from Louisville, Kentucky-based black metal band ANAGNORISIS. The band is celebrating its return, following a decade-long absence, with their upcoming fourth album, Caregriever.

ANAGNORISIS’ Caregriever explores the experience of witnessing the gradual decline and eventual death of a loved one over the course of five years. The album examines the emotional complexities that accompany prolonged loss: grief, anger, guilt, depression, isolation, exhaustion, and the conflicting emotions that often remain unspoken. Rather than focusing solely on death itself, Caregriever centers on the difficult process of watching someone slowly disappear long before they are gone. The album’s title reflects both its subject matter and its perspective. Caregriever exists in the space where caregiving and grief become inseparable—where mourning begins years before death, and where devotion, resentment, hope, and despair often coexist. The record confronts these realities, documenting the emotional toll of prolonged responsibility and the complicated aftermath that follows loss.

Musically, Caregriever marks a deliberate shift in ANAGNORISIS’ approach. While continuing the band’s exploration of post-black metal, the material abandons much of the symphonic scope present on previous releases in favor of a darker, more focused, and immediate sound. Elements of industrial music and punk are woven throughout the album, reflecting the tension, urgency, and emotional weight of its subject matter. The result is a record that remains unmistakably Anagnorisis while pushing further into new territory.

Caregriever was produced and recorded by the band’s Zak Denham and Zachary Kerr with drums and bass recorded at Top Track Studios, mixed and mastered by Zak Denham, and features backing vocals by Josh Mumford, vocals and lyrics on “Death Of Man” by Niels Riethorst, samples by James E. Kerr, with cover art handled by August Friedrich Schenck and Charles Maurand

With the new single, Zachary Kerr reveals, “We chose ‘Choke’ as the next single because I think it shows another side of what Caregriever is. ‘Nothing Left To Give’ introduced a lot of the intensity and emotional weight behind the record, but ‘Choke’ feels to me more immediate and suffocating. The beginning is a testament to what happens when resilience becomes a gag. There’s an anger and desperation to it that’s really central to the album. We didn’t want the singles to simply be the most immediately accessible songs—we wanted them to reveal different pieces of the story and the emotional progression of the record. ‘Choke’ felt like an important piece to expose before people hear the album as a whole.

“We felt it was important to share the first quarter of the record as a sort of prologue. Both ‘Choke’ and ‘Nothing Left To Give’ tell the story of Caregriever, if you peel back enough of the layers. The following six tracks then allow the listener to take that information with them and look at the different paths ahead—knowing where the story ultimately ends: grief. Knowing the path toward it is not a pleasant journey. What remains is everything that happens along the way.”

Everything Is Noise writes, “While ANAGNORISIS may be missing the keyboard and synth elements that gave texture to their earlier work, the band has made up for that missing element by sounding more ferocious… The sounds may be bleak, but it is clear that they are derived from a place of processing grief giving these songs a weight that can only come from the fleeting and failing acts of love and kindness that comes from being human, touching, angry, and cathartic.”

Caregriever will be released on October 23rd. Bölverk Collective is handling the US CD pressing, ANAGNORISIS’ own Negative Reflections is handling the US LP pressing, and Vendetta Records is handling the CD and LP for Europe. Preorders, including US bundles, and digital presaves are available where “Nothing Left To Give” is streaming HERE. So Below Productions will be unveiling a limited cassette run with preorders going live this Friday.

ANAGNORISIS also returns to the stage for the first time since before their hiatus, unveiling several new shows. The band will play a release show in Chicago on the day of the album’s release, October 23rd – their first show in ten years – and another the following day in Milwaukee, both with Unsouling and others. December Midwest dates will be announced in the days ahead. The band was also just confirmed for Northwest Terror Fest 2027 with Artificial Brain, Catharsis, Deadguy, Napalm Death, Lair Of The Minotaur, and many others, surrounded by a run of tour dates, marking the band’s first shows on the West Coast.

Originally active from 2003 to 2016, ANAGNORISIS resurfaced behind the scenes in 2024 to begin work on new material. Known for their personal, introspective, and theatrical approach to extreme metal, ANAGNORISIS explores themes of childhood trauma, depression, grief, and self-reflection. The band gained significant domestic and international attention with its second and third full-length albums, Beyond All Light (2013) and Peripeteia (2016). Following a limited run of tour dates supporting Peripeteia and the departure of longtime keyboardist Sam Hartman, ANAGNORISIS entered an extended hiatus.

In 2023, frontman Zachary Kerr began developing new material under the moniker Caregriever, a solo project conceived as an outlet for processing the emotional and physical exhaustion of caring full-time for his now-late father-in-law. Reconnecting with longtime creative partner and ANAGNORISIS guitarist Zak Denham, the pair began shaping the material into something larger than a solo endeavor. What started as Caregriever gradually evolved into the foundation of ANAGNORISIS’ fourth full-length album. The new material was subsequently shared with longtime bandmates Josh Mumford (bass) and Cody McCoy (drums), reuniting the core lineup and setting the stage for the band’s return. Recording sessions for Caregriever began in the summer of 2024, marking the band’s first new material in nearly a decade.

For a band that has consistently drawn inspiration from deeply personal experiences, Caregriever represents both a continuation and a transformation. It is the culmination of years spent confronting mortality, responsibility, and loss, filtered through a creative partnership and lineup that has endured despite nearly a decade of silence. More than a return, Caregriever is a document of survival—an attempt to find meaning in the years spent caring for someone through their final chapter, and in learning how to exist after they are gone.
